Convicted rapists will spend the ‘entirety’ of their sentence behind bars with no prospect of early release, vows Justice Secretary
Convicted rapists will spend the ‘entirety’ of their sentence behind bars, Justice Secretary Alex Chalk vowed last night.
He promised to end the possibility of early release for people convicted of the most serious sexual offences.
The Justice Secretary said: ‘We will ensure rapists spend the entirety of their sentence in prison – so that victims get the justice they deserve and the British people are protected.
‘No longer will the perpetrators of this heinous crime walk out of prison after even two-thirds of their sentence.’
He added: ‘A 15-year sentence will mean 15 years in prison.
‘This is the justice that the British people expect, and we will deliver it.’
Britain’s Justice Secretary Alex Chalk addresses delegates at the annual Conservative Party Conference in Manchester, northern England, on October 3, 2023
Figures last week revealed that the prison population behind bars in England and Wales was now at a record high for modern times of 88,225 inmates in England and Wales.
The move comes amid the expectation that this Autumn’s King’s Speech of new government legislation which include a heavy emphasis on tackling crime.
The new tough approach comes reports last week that rapists and burglars will escape being sent immediately to jail because the country is running out of prison places, with judges told to delay sentencing hearings.
But writing in the Telegraph, the Justice Secretary said: ‘There have been inaccurate reports claiming that judges are being told not to send rapists to prison.
‘Let me be categorical: this is untrue.
‘Under this Government, the most serious and dangerous offenders are being locked away for longer.’
The announcement set for tomorrow comes amid a prison overcrowding crisis, with figures last week revealing that the prison population behind bars in England and Wales was now at a record high for modern times of 88,225 inmates in England and Wales.
And the Justice Secretary conceded that the Government did need to ‘think again about how we manage population pressures in the long term, so there are always sufficient spaces to lock up the most dangerous criminals’.
To that end, Mr Chalk also pledged to pursue Texas-style justice by sending fewer low-level offenders to prison, and making them clean up graffiti and plant forests instead.
He said the reform would end the ‘cycle of criminality’ caused by a ‘merry-go-round of short sentences’.
